Day 10: Not One Promise Failed
Bible passage: Joshua 21:43–45; Deuteronomy 7:9; 2 Peter 1:3–4; 2 Corinthians 1:20
A God Who Makes Promises
Today is Sunday 7th of April 2019. Welcome to Day 10 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. We are almost halfway. Today we look at the God who makes promises and keeps them.
Moses wanted Israel to be sure of one thing before they entered the land. The Lord their God is the faithful God, who keeps His covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes His unfailing love on those who love Him and obey His commands (Deuteronomy 7:9).
The God of Promise
The Record
Many years later, the book of Joshua looks back over the whole story. The Lord had given Israel all the land He had sworn to give their ancestors. He had given them rest on every side, as He had solemnly promised. Then comes the summary. Not a single one of all the good promises the Lord had given to Israel was left unfulfilled; “everything he had spoken came true.” Joshua 21:45 (NLT)
It had taken centuries. There had been slavery, a wilderness and a river in flood on the way. But when they looked back, not one promise was missing.
Great and Precious
Peter tells us that God’s promises are for us as well. By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. He has given us great and precious promises, and through them we share His divine nature and escape the corruption that is in the world (2 Peter 1:3–4).
The promises are more than comfort for hard days. They are the means by which God changes us.
Yes in Christ
Paul tells us where every promise meets. All of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ our “Amen” goes up to God for His glory (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Jesus is the guarantee. If God kept His greatest promise by sending His Son, He will keep the rest.
Holding On to a Promise
Between the Promise and the Answer
Most of the life of faith is lived in the gap between the promise and its fulfilment. Israel knew that gap well. In it, we choose whom to believe: our circumstances, or the God who has spoken.
Three Steps for Today
Praise Him. Thank God for the promises you have already seen Him keep. Name them.
Find one. What are you trusting God for at the moment? Find a verse of Scripture that speaks to it.
Meditate on it. Write the verse out and carry it with you. Read it through several times during the day, and add your own “Amen”.
Prayer for Today:
Faithful God, thank You that not one of Your good promises has ever failed. Thank You that every promise is “Yes” in Jesus. I bring You the thing I am trusting You for today, and I take hold of Your Word. Help me to believe You in the waiting, and let Your promises change me to be more like You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
