Day 9: This Is the Way You Should Go

Bible passage: Isaiah 30:19–21; Isaiah 58:11; John 14:26; John 16:12–15

Which Way?

Today is Saturday 6th of April 2019. Welcome to Day 9 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Many of us began this fast with a decision to make or a question we could not answer. Today is for us. Our God guides.

Isaiah makes a promise to people who have cried to God for help. Their own ears will hear Him. Right behind them a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left. Isaiah 30:21 (NLT)

The God Who Guides

Close Enough to Hear

Notice where the voice is. It is right behind them. A guide who walks that close is not shouting directions from a distance. He is on the road with us. Notice also when the voice comes. It comes at the point of turning, when we need it.

Continually

In another place Isaiah says that the Lord will guide us continually. He will give us water when we are dry and restore our strength. We will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring that never stops flowing (Isaiah 58:11).

God’s guidance is more than an occasional answer to a large question. It is steady care, day after day. And it comes with refreshment. He does not only tell us where to go. He gives us strength for the journey.

How He Guides Us Now

The Spirit Who Teaches

On the night before He died, Jesus told His disciples how they would be guided after He had gone. The Father would send the Holy Spirit, who would teach them everything and remind them of everything Jesus had told them (John 14:26).

The Spirit of Truth

Jesus also said that there was much more He wanted to tell them, but they could not bear it yet. When the Spirit of truth came, He would guide them into all truth (John 16:12–13).

Two things are worth noticing. First, God shows us what we can bear, when we can bear it. We are rarely given the whole picture at once. Second, the Spirit does not speak on His own account. He brings glory to Jesus (John 16:14). So here is a simple test for any guidance we think we have received. Does it honour Jesus, and does it agree with what He has said in the Scriptures?

Three Steps for Today

  • Thank Him. Look back and thank God for the loving, trustworthy way He has guided you so far.

  • Ask. Bring Him the decision or the question that is on your mind. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into the truth He wants you to see today.

  • Listen. Sit quietly with your Bible open. Write down what you sense, test it against Scripture and share it with a mature Christian.

Prayer for Today:
Lord, thank You that You do not leave me to find my own way. You are close enough for me to hear You. Thank You for every time You have guided me, even when I did not notice. Holy Spirit, teach me and lead me into the truth. Show me the next step, and give me the strength to take it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
