Is Jesus Your Teacher and Lord?
"You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am."
John 13:13 (NKJV)
Think about the sheer volume of messages that arrive in your mind on an ordinary day. Advertisements, news, social media, conversations, entertainment: each one carrying assumptions about what matters, what is valuable, what constitutes success, what kind of person you should be.
Most of these messages are not neutral. They are teaching you something. They are shaping your sense of what is normal, what is desirable, what is possible. And because the volume is so constant and the messaging so sophisticated, the shaping happens largely without your awareness.
Against all of that, Jesus makes a direct and personal claim: You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. Not a teacher among many. Not one voice in the chorus. Teacher. Lord. The One whose word on any matter is final, whose values define what is actually true, whose perspective on life is the one that corresponds to reality.
What this world calls valuable, God calls worthless. What this world scorns, God exalts. The world's message is: pursue success, accumulate security, perform for approval, protect yourself. Jesus says: lose your life to find it, serve others rather than demanding to be served, love your enemies, take up your cross.
These are not merely different priorities. They are a completely different vision of what it means to be human and what it means to live well. And they cannot both be right.
The question is not which one sounds more appealing. The question is which one is true. And if Jesus is who He says He is, then His teaching is not one option among many. It is the truth about everything.
Is Jesus genuinely your Teacher? Not in theory, not at church on Sunday, but in the actual decisions you make, the actual values you hold, the actual way you spend your time and money and attention? Is He your Lord?
He says He is. The question is whether you have said it back.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You as my Teacher and my Lord. Not just in words but in the actual shape of my life. Help me to let Your teaching reshape the way the world has shaped me. You are the truth. Let me live like it. Amen.
