Building a New Basket
Exodus 2:3 (NIV) But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
When the cries of her baby grew too loud and the Egyptian search parties drew near, Jochebed reached a crisis point. The hiding phase was over. It was time to build. The Scripture notes she got a papyrus basket for him. The Hebrew word used here is fascinating: tebah (תֵּבָה). This is not just a standard word for a woven basket; it is the exact same word used in Genesis for Noah’s Ark. In both stories, tebah represents a vessel of protection, a divinely appointed means for preserving life in the midst of overwhelming danger. Just as Noah’s Ark sheltered a remnant from the flood, Jochebed’s humble basket became the means by which God preserved the future deliverer of Israel. The parallel is striking: what looks small or fragile in human eyes can be the very tool God uses for a mighty purpose.
Jochebed wasn’t just doing crafts; she was building a mini-salvation ship. Her act was an expression of faith and courage in the face of impossible odds. Arthur W. Pink observes in Gleanings in Exodus, "It was faith that prepared the ark, making it a place of security." Jochebed trusted God enough to risk everything, placing her precious child in the river, entrusting him to divine protection. When a crisis hits your home, you cannot rely on old habits or fragile systems. You have to build an ark. You have to actively construct a spiritually secure environment. Faith requires us to take the materials we have, however humble, and weave them together into a vessel of deliverance. Even when our efforts seem small or inadequate, God is able to work through them, turning acts of obedience into channels of salvation and hope.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, when crisis hits, anchor my heart in Your perfect peace and keep my eyes fixed on You. Instead of giving in to fear or panic, remind me of Your faithfulness throughout Scripture from Noah’s ark to the basket that saved Moses, and above all, through the cross and resurrection by which You have secured our ultimate deliverance. Grant me wisdom and discernment to build a spiritual ark for my family, one founded on Your Word, sustained by prayer, and strengthened by the power of Your Spirit. Help me to trust not in my own strength or understanding, but in Your finished work and saving grace. I surrender every fear, every need, and every hope to You, Lord Jesus. Be the Saviour, Protector, and Shepherd of my home. Guide us in building lives that honour and reflect You, both in times of peace and in seasons of storm. In Your mighty and precious name, Amen.
