Day 6 - Jesus died so that we can have eternal life
“10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.”
Life with Him, Now and For Ever
Today on our sixth day of prayer and fasting, we are looking at how Jesus died so that we can have eternal life.
What does it mean for us as believers, either awake or asleep, to “live together with Him”? In simplest terms, it means that Christ’s death on the cross opened heaven to us for all eternity.
Today’s verse reminds us of the hope that we have as Christians, both in this life and in the life to come, and encourages us to continue to place our faith in Jesus Christ.
You see the Bible is clear that, ultimately, there are only two options for where you go when you die: Heaven or Hell. The Bible also makes it clear that you can determine where you go when you die. The choice is yours to make. God has given you freewill. Simply trust Jesus for your salvation. Believe that He died on the cross and paid the price for your sins, and that His resurrection guarantees your eternal life.
Awake or Asleep
In this letter Paul uses the word “asleep” for believers who have died (1 Thessalonians 4:13–14). The church in Thessalonica was worried about Christians who had died before Jesus returned. Paul’s answer is that it makes no difference. Whether we are alive or have died when He comes, we will live together with Him.
He describes that day. The Lord Himself will come down from heaven, the dead in Christ will rise first, and then those who are still alive will be caught up together with them. So we will be with the Lord for ever (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17).
Eternal life does not start at the funeral. Jesus said that whoever hears His word and believes has already crossed over from death to life (John 5:24). God did not appoint us to suffer wrath, but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:9). So we encourage one another with these words (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
Pray It Through
Receive the gift. If you have never put your trust in Jesus, pray the prayer below and mean it.
Thank Him for hope. Thank God for believers you have loved who are now with the Lord.
Encourage someone. Who needs to hear this hope today? Share it with them.
Let us pray
Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner and do not deserve eternal life. But I believe You died and rose from the grave to purchase a place in Heaven for me. I accept the free gift of eternal life. In Your precious name I pray, Amen.
Keep going
