Day 5 - Jesus died so that we might be born again
“3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.””
You Must Be Born Again
Today on our fifth day of prayer and fasting, we are looking at how Jesus died so that we might be born again.
In today’s verse Jesus tells Nicodemus, that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. How can we be born again? Jesus is referring to a spiritual rebirth. This spiritual rebirth is made possible through our faith in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead.
When we accept Jesus as our saviour and believe in him, we are spiritually reborn and become new creations in Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17, tells us, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" This verse highlights the transformative power of faith in Jesus Christ, which enables us to become new creations and experience new life in Him.
Born of the Spirit
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the ruling council. He was religious, moral and well taught, and he came to Jesus at night (John 3:1–2). Jesus told this good man that he still needed to be born again. No amount of religion can take the place of new birth.
Jesus explained that flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit (John 3:6). We cannot produce new life in ourselves by trying harder. It is the work of the Holy Spirit in everyone who believes. To all who receive Jesus, He gives the right to become children of God (John 1:12–13).
Jesus then told Nicodemus how it would be made possible. The Son of Man would be lifted up, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him (John 3:14–15). The next verse is the best known in the Bible: God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son (John 3:16).
Pray It Through
Be sure. Have you been born again? If you are not sure, put your trust in Jesus today and ask Him to make you new.
Thank the Holy Spirit. Thank Him for the new life He has given you.
Pray for a Nicodemus. Think of someone who is religious or good, but does not know Jesus. Pray for them by name.
Let us pray
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your unconditional love. Thank You for showing us just how great Your love is by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Lord God, we thank You for the precious gift of eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
