One Mediator Between God and Us

Today on our first day of prayer and fasting, we are looking at how Jesus died to become the mediator of the New Covenant.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites had a covenant with God, which was based on the Law of Moses. However, this covenant was limited in its ability to provide forgiveness of sins and eternal salvation. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ came to establish a new and better covenant between God and humanity.

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus made a way for people to be reconciled with God and receive forgiveness of sins. He became the mediator of this new covenant, which is based on grace, faith, and the love of God.

This new covenant is not based on human effort or works, but on the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Through faith in Him, we can have eternal life and be adopted into the family of God.

Why We Need a Mediator

A mediator stands between two parties and brings them together. Long before Jesus came, Job longed for someone who could do that for him and God (Job 9:33). Sin had opened a gap that no human being could cross.

Jesus is the only one who can stand in that gap, because He is fully God and fully man. He gave Himself as a ransom for all people (1 Timothy 2:6). That is why the Bible calls Him the mediator of a new covenant (Hebrews 9:15).

So we do not need anyone else to stand between us and God. Because of Jesus we can come boldly to the throne of grace and find mercy when we need it (Hebrews 4:16). Paul writes this verse while urging the church to pray for everyone, because God wants all people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:1–4).

Pray It Through

  • Come boldly. Thank Jesus that you can come straight to the Father through Him.

  • Pray for all people. Name three people who do not yet know Christ and ask God to save them.

  • Pray for those in authority. Paul asks us to pray for kings and leaders (1 Timothy 2:2). Pray for ours today.

Let us pray

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that there is only one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus. We recognise that it is only through Jesus that we can approach you, and we thank you for the way he has made for us to be reconciled to you. Amen
