Day 3: Fed by the Word of God
Bible passage: Psalm 34:8; Matthew 4:1–4; John 4:31–34
Taste and See
Today is Sunday 3rd of January 2021. Welcome to Day 3 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. By now your body may be telling you that it is hungry. Today we turn that hunger towards the food that lasts.
David wrote Psalm 34 after a narrow escape from his enemies. He does not invite us to think about whether God is good. He invites us to find out. “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Psalm 34:8 (NLT)
Some things can only be known by experience. You can read a menu all day and still be hungry.
Bread for the Soul
Every Word
After Jesus had fasted for forty days, the tempter came to Him and suggested that He turn stones into bread. Jesus answered from the book of Deuteronomy. People do not live by bread alone, He said, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).
Jesus was at His weakest in body, yet He stood firm, because He was fed on Scripture. He met every temptation with the words “the Scriptures say”.
Sweeter Than Honey
Psalm 19 tells us what the Word of God does. It revives the soul, makes the simple wise, brings joy to the heart and gives insight for living. It is more to be desired than gold and sweeter than honey (Psalm 19:7–10). Hebrews 4:12 adds that it is alive and powerful.
The Bible is far more than information about God. It is nourishment from God.
Food You Know Nothing About
In John 4, the disciples go into town to buy food. When they come back they urge Jesus to eat, and He tells them that He has a kind of food they know nothing about. His nourishment, He explains, comes from doing the will of God and finishing His work (John 4:34).
So we are fed in two ways: by hearing the Word and by doing it. A sermon that is heard and not obeyed is like a meal that is looked at and not eaten. James tells us not only to listen to God’s Word but to do what it says (James 1:22).
Coming to the Table
Three Steps for Today
Set a place. Decide when and where you will read the Bible each day of this fast. Let it take the place of a meal or of time in front of a screen.
Chew slowly. Read a short passage twice. Choose one verse to carry with you through the day and write it down.
Do what it says. Before you close your Bible, ask, “What is one thing here that I can obey today?”
Jesus said that He is the bread of life, and that whoever comes to Him will never be hungry again (John 6:35). Come and eat.
Prayer for Today:
Lord, thank You for Your Word. It is food for my soul and light for my path. Forgive me for the days I have gone without it and wondered why I felt weak. Give me a fresh appetite for the Scriptures. Open my eyes as I read, and give me the will to do what You say. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
