Day 2: Trusting God with the Whole Road

Bible passage: Proverbs 3:5–6; James 1:2–8

Who Is Holding the Map?

Today is Saturday 2nd of January 2021. Welcome to Day 2 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Yesterday we asked God to help us hear His voice. Today we ask for the faith to trust what He says.

At the start of a year most of us want a plan. If the last twelve months taught us anything, it is how quickly plans can fall apart. Proverbs gives us something better than a plan. It gives us a Person to trust.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (NLT)

Trust with All Your Heart

All, Not Some

Solomon does not say “trust the Lord a little”. He says with all your heart, and in the next verse he says in all you do. Many of us trust God with eternity and then try to manage Monday on our own. He asks for the whole of us.

Where the Weight Rests

To depend on something is to put your weight on it, as you would lean on a walking stick. Our own understanding is useful, but it is limited. We can see a few steps ahead. God can see the whole road.

This is not a call to stop thinking. It is a question of where our weight rests when our understanding runs out.

He Will Show You the Path

Then comes the promise. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take (Proverbs 3:6). He rarely hands us the whole map in advance. He shows us the next step, and He walks it with us.

When Trust Is Tested

Ask for Wisdom

James was writing to believers under pressure. He tells them that troubles test our faith and produce endurance (James 1:2–4). Then he adds that if we need wisdom, we should ask our generous God, who will give it and will not tell us off for asking (James 1:5).

But we are to ask in faith. A person whose loyalty is divided, James says, is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind (James 1:6–8). Unwavering faith does not mean that we never feel a doubt. It means that we have decided where we will stand.

And we can stand there with confidence, because God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

Three Steps for Today

  • Hand it over. Name the area where you rely most on your own understanding. It might be money, a relationship or a decision. Tell God that you are putting your weight on Him.

  • Ask for wisdom. Be specific about what you need to know, and then expect Him to answer.

  • Find a promise. Search the Scriptures for a promise that speaks to your need. Write it down and keep it where you will see it.

Faith may not change your circumstances today. It will change you in the middle of them.

Prayer for Today:
Lord, I confess that I often lean on my own understanding. Today I choose to trust You with all my heart. I bring You the decisions and worries I have been carrying alone. Give me wisdom, steady my faith and show me the next step. I believe that You are working all things together for good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
