Day 21: Keep Seeking God First

Bible passage: Matthew 6:31–34; Jeremiah 29:13; Colossians 3:1–2

The Last Day of the Fast

Today is Tuesday 21st of January 2020. Welcome to Day 21, the final day of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Well done for staying the course.

For three weeks we have deliberately made time to seek God. We have read His Word and listened for His voice. Some of us can point to a clear moment when God spoke. Others cannot, and wonder whether anything happened. Some of us kept the fast we planned, and some of us slipped along the way.

Whichever is true of you, these days have mattered, because you did what God asks His people to do. You sought Him.

A Promise for Seekers

He Will Be Found

God made a promise through Jeremiah, and He has not withdrawn it. “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” Jeremiah 29:13 (NLT)

God does not hide from people who are looking for Him. David knew that from experience. Those who know God’s name trust in Him, because He does not abandon those who search for Him (Psalm 9:10).

Above All Else

We began this fast with the words of Jesus, and we end with them. Do not be anxious about what you will eat, drink or wear. Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need (Matthew 6:31–33).

Seeking God first is not a January activity. It is an order of priorities for the whole of life.

Heart, Soul and Mind

David once told the leaders of Israel to seek the Lord their God with all their heart and soul (1 Chronicles 22:19). Paul adds the mind. Since we have been raised to new life with Christ, we are to set our sights on the realities of heaven and to think about the things of heaven and not the things of earth (Colossians 3:1–2).

That is the whole person turned towards God, with nothing held back.

From 21 Days to Every Day

Three Steps for Today

  • Give thanks. Look back through your notebook. Write down what God has said and done, and thank Him for each thing.

  • Decide. Choose what you will keep from these three weeks: your time with God each day, a weekly fast or a habit you will leave behind.

  • Tell someone. Share one thing God has done in you with another person, and ask them to hold you to your decision.

There is one more guide to come tomorrow, with some simple ways to keep going from Day 22 onwards.

Prayer for Today:
Father God, thank You for these 21 days. Thank You that You do not hide from me, and that when I seek You I find You. Keep me hungry and thirsty for You. I choose today to keep seeking You first, with all my heart, every day. I love You, Lord, and I want to know You and love You more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Keep going
