What Your Body Is Saying

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Romans 12:1-2 (NKJV)

Other people cannot see what is happening inside you. They cannot see your thoughts, your motives, your private commitments or your interior struggles. What they can see is your body: your face, your posture, your actions, your words, your habits, your choices.

Paul makes a startling point in Romans 12: the way we use our bodies communicates what we are on the inside. If we claim to follow Christ but our actions tell a different story, people have a right to question our claim. The outer life is not an independent department. It is the visible expression of what the inner life actually is.

Presenting your body as a living sacrifice is a rich and demanding image. In the Old Testament, a sacrifice was a costly gift offered wholly to God. It was not returned. It was not presented conditionally, with certain parts held back. It was complete. Paul says our lives are to be offered to God in exactly this way: wholly, without reservation, as an act of worship.

And this offering begins with the mind. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. The word 'conformed' suggests the gradual, passive process of being shaped by constant pressure. Like water wearing away rock, the world's values and assumptions press on us constantly, and if we are not actively and intentionally pushing back, we will be quietly shaped into its mould.

The antidote is transformation from within. A renewed mind, saturated with God's Word and submitted to His Spirit, that evaluates all of life from the perspective of eternity rather than the values of culture.

What does your outer life communicate about your inner commitment? Not in ideal circumstances, but in the ordinary, unguarded moments of a normal day. That is where the real answer lives.

Prayer: Lord, I present myself to You today as a living sacrifice. Transform my mind by Your Word. Let the way I use my body in every ordinary moment be a genuine expression of my commitment to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
