Give Joyfully
"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV)
Giving is one of the topics that Christians most often feel uncomfortable talking about. In some churches, it has been handled so badly, so manipulatively, so financially focused that the mention of it makes people reach for their guard. And the discomfort is understandable. Where the gift of generosity has been exploited, real damage has been done.
But we cannot let the misuse of a truth destroy the truth itself. Generosity is one of the most beautiful and most liberating aspects of the Christian life. And the New Testament has a great deal to say about it.
Paul's instruction is striking in what it does not say. He does not say: give a precise percentage. He does not say, " Give until it hurts. He does not say: give so that God will give back to you. He says: give what you have decided in your heart to give. Freely. Cheerfully. Not reluctantly, not under pressure.
And then he says something that should recalibrate the whole conversation: your giving is a measure of the depth of your commitment to Jesus Christ. Not the amount. The attitude. A person who gives reluctantly, under pressure, or to be seen is revealing something about the state of their heart. A person who gives freely, cheerfully, as a genuine act of love and trust, is revealing something else entirely.
Here is the liberating truth at the heart of Christian generosity: everything I have was given to me by God. My time, my abilities, my opportunities, my resources. None of it is ultimately mine. I am a steward, not an owner. And when I give, I am simply returning to God what was His to begin with, as an act of worship and trust.
That perspective transforms giving from a financial transaction into an act of genuine joy.
Give today. Not because you have to. Because you want to. Because God loved you that way first.
Prayer: Lord, You gave everything for me. Help me to give back to You and to others with the same joyful generosity. Remove reluctance from my giving and replace it with genuine delight in being a channel of Your blessing. In Jesus' name, Amen.
