Why Pray?

Why Pray?

Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
— Matthew 6:8 (NIV)

I have met many Christians who wrestle with this question: if God already knows everything, why bother praying? It's a fair question, and I want to give you a real answer, not a religious cliché, but something that has genuinely shaped the way I pray.

The truth is, God already knows our needs; that is not a reason to stop praying. It is the very reason we can pray with confidence.

Think about it this way. When my children were young, there were times they would come to me with a need I already knew about. I would watch them struggling with something and notice the strain on their face. But I still wanted them to come and talk to me, not because I needed the information, but because I needed the relationship. There is something sacred about a child coming to a parent and opening their heart.

God is our Heavenly Father, and He delights in us coming to Him. He already knows your need, but He wants you to bring it to Him. He wants to hear your voice. He wants that intimacy with you.

There's also something deeply comforting in knowing that the One you're praying to is not surprised by your situation. He has not been caught off guard. He knew this moment was coming long before you did, and He is already at work in the solution. You're not petitioning a confused or limited God. You're coming to a Father who is fully aware and fully in control.

This is why Jesus could say, almost in the same breath, both 'your Father knows what you need' and 'pray like this...' There is no contradiction. Knowing God is aware does not eliminate prayer; it enriches it. It means every prayer you lift to God is received by One who understands the full picture, even when you only see a fragment of it.

So don't let the enemy convince you that prayer is pointless. Don't let familiarity with the idea of God knowing all things rob you of the joy of actually talking to Him. He is a Father, not a filing cabinet. He wants your heart, not just your requests.

Come to Him today, with everything. Nothing is too small, nothing too difficult, nothing too broken. He already knows, and He already cares more than you know.

Prayer:

Father, thank You that You know me completely and love me still. Help me to pray not out of duty but out of a genuine desire to know You more. I bring my needs before You today, trusting that You already have the answer. In Jesus' name, Amen.
