Prayers That Change History
"Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God."
2 Kings 19:19 (NIV)
We have shrunk prayer down to such a small thing. We treat it as personal therapy, as a way to manage our anxiety, as a polite ritual before meals. And while prayer certainly does all of those things, we have lost sight of something magnificent: prayer changes the course of history.
King Hezekiah faced an impossible situation. The Assyrian army, the most terrifying military force of its day, had surrounded Jerusalem. The enemy's messenger had already sent his taunting letter: surrender or be destroyed. By every human calculation, it was over.
But Hezekiah went to the temple, spread the letter before God, and prayed. Not a panicked, rambling prayer. A focused, faith-filled prayer that said: 'Lord, You are the only God. All the kingdoms of the earth may know this. Act for Your glory.' And that night, 185,000 soldiers of the Assyrian army were struck down by the angel of the Lord. The city was saved.
That is what prayer can do. Not just Hezekiah's prayer, but prayer throughout the Bible. Elijah prayed, and fire fell. The early Church prayed, and Peter walked out of prison. Paul and Silas prayed, and the prison doors opened. History bends at the knees of those who truly pray.
I believe we are living in a moment that desperately needs praying people. The challenges we face in our nation, in our families, in the Church, and in our communities will not be resolved by better politics or sharper strategy alone. They require the intervention of God. And God moves in response to prayer.
Do not underestimate the prayers you pray in private. You may never see all the ways they are working. But they are. Heaven is moved by sincere, believing prayer, and history, including the history of the people you love, can be changed by it.
What seemingly impossible situation are you facing? Spread it before God today, as Hezekiah spread that letter. Ask Him to act for His glory. And then wait in faith.
He is still the God who answers prayer.
Prayer: Lord, restore in me a vision for what prayer can truly do. I lay before You the situations that seem impossible. As You moved for Hezekiah, move in our time. Act for Your glory, that all may know You are the Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen.
