Keep the Appointment
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."
James 1:5 (NIV)
I heard a story that has stayed with me for years. A young company president had a habit that puzzled his staff: every morning, without fail, he told his secretary that he was not to be disturbed because he had an important appointment. No exceptions.
One morning, the chairman of the board arrived unannounced and demanded to see the president. The secretary refused him entry. Furious, the chairman pushed the door open and stopped short. The president was on his knees in prayer.
The chairman quietly closed the door and asked the secretary, 'Is that usual?' When she said, 'Yes, sir, every morning,' the chairman replied simply: 'No wonder we come to him for advice.'
There is something profound in that story. The man's wisdom, his reputation, his clear-headed leadership, all of it flowed from one non-negotiable habit: he kept his appointment with God every single day.
James tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God. And God gives generously, without finding fault, without making us feel embarrassed for not having the answers, without impatience or reluctance. He simply gives. But the asking requires showing up.
I believe one of the great neglected disciplines in the lives of many sincere Christians is a consistent daily appointment with God. Not a rushed few seconds before breakfast. Not a prayer on the commute when nothing else is available. A proper, unhurried, intentional time set aside to be with God, to read His Word, to listen, to pray, to simply be in His presence.
What would it look like for you to make this appointment non-negotiable? What would have to change in your morning, your schedule, your habits? Whatever it costs, it is worth it. The wisdom you need for your family, your work, your decisions, and your relationships flows from this one source.
Keep the appointment today. God is already there, waiting.
Prayer: Lord, I want to make my time with You the most important appointment of my day. Forgive me when I crowd You out with busyness. Give me the wisdom I need and help me to be faithful to seek You daily. In Jesus' name, Amen.
