A Mind Fixed on God
"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You."
Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)
Peace. It is one of the most universally longed-for things in the world, and one of the rarest. People search for it in therapy and meditation, in travel and achievement, in relationships and substances, and still find themselves anxious, restless, and unsettled.
But the Bible offers a very specific diagnosis and a very specific prescription. The diagnosis: our minds are not stayed on God. The prescription: fix them there, and watch what happens.
Isaiah writes this during one of the most turbulent periods of Israel's history. Political instability, military threats, moral confusion, not entirely unlike our own time. And into that chaos, the prophet speaks a word that cuts through everything: 'You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You.'
Notice what perfect peace is connected to: not perfect circumstances, not the resolution of your problems, not the absence of threats. It is connected to where your mind is fixed. This is a remarkable truth because it means peace is always available to you, not because your situation has changed, but because you have chosen where to direct your attention.
When troubles come, and they will, our minds naturally fly towards them. We rehearse the worst-case scenario, we lie awake cataloguing every possible outcome, we worry as though worrying were a form of control. But it isn't. It is simply anxiety with good intentions.
What it means to stay your mind on God is to deliberately, repeatedly, and wilfully choose to think about who God is rather than what your problem looks like. It is to rehearse His promises instead of your fears, to recall His faithfulness instead of your failures, to fix your eyes on Christ rather than the waves.
This takes practice. It takes discipline. But every time you choose to redirect your thoughts to God, you are exercising a spiritual muscle that grows stronger with use.
He will keep you in perfect peace. The promise is sure. Fix your mind on Him today.
Prayer: Lord, I confess my mind wanders so quickly to worry and fear. Today I deliberately fix my thoughts on You, on Your goodness, Your power, Your faithfulness. Keep me in that perfect peace that only comes from trusting You completely. In Jesus' name, Amen.
