Sickness and Healing

A difficult diagnosis, long-term pain, or watching someone you love become unwell can shake you to the core. Sickness affects not only our bodies but our emotions, our finances, our relationships and sometimes our faith.

We believe that God still heals today. Jesus healed the sick wherever He went, and we believe that deliverance from sickness by divine healing is provided for in His death on the cross: “by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). The Bible invites us to pray for the sick with faith and expectation.

We also know that God works in many ways. Sometimes He heals instantly, sometimes gradually, sometimes through doctors and medicine, and sometimes the full healing we long for will only come in eternity. In every case, He is with us.

If you or someone you love is unwell, here are some steps to take:

  1. Ask for prayer. James 5:14 says, “Is anyone among you ill? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them.” Our pastors would be glad to pray with you.

  2. Pray with faith. Bring your need to God boldly and keep praying. Jesus encouraged us to ask, seek and knock (Matthew 7:7).

  3. Keep seeing your doctor. Seeking medical care is not a lack of faith. Keep taking the treatment you have been prescribed.

  4. Let others help. Accept meals, lifts and visits. Receiving care is part of being the family of God.

  5. Hold on to God’s promises. Read Psalm 103, Psalm 91 and 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 when you feel weary.

Whatever you are facing, you are not alone. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
