Doubt

Is God really there? Does He hear my prayers? Is the Bible true? If you have ever asked questions like these, you are not alone. Many faithful Christians go through seasons of doubt, especially after disappointment, suffering or unanswered prayer.

Doubt is not the opposite of faith. The Bible is full of people who wrestled with questions: Thomas wanted to see the risen Jesus for himself, and Jesus met him with patience, not rejection (John 20:24–29). A desperate father once cried out to Jesus, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24), and Jesus answered his prayer.

If you are struggling with doubt, here are some steps to take:

  1. Bring your questions to God. He is not threatened by honest questions. Tell Him what you are wrestling with.

  2. Ask your questions out loud. Talk to a pastor or a mature Christian. Our Questions People Ask page and courses like Alpha are good places to explore.

  3. Keep reading the Bible. Start with one of the Gospels and look at the life of Jesus. Faith grows as we get to know Him.

  4. Remember what God has done. Write down the times He has been faithful to you or to others. Testimonies strengthen faith.

  5. Stay in community. Doubt grows in isolation. Keep coming to church and let others carry faith for you when yours feels weak.

God is patient with us. “Be merciful to those who doubt” (Jude 22) is His heart towards you. Keep seeking, and you will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13).
