“7 Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.”
Even though culture tells us that we should live our own truth and do whatever we think is best, it is this type of thinking that leads us into trouble.
Our capacity for wisdom is limited to our experiences. This is why Scripture tells us not to be wise in our own eyes.
True wisdom comes from fearing God. This means we should have a high regard for God's Word and His instructions to us. He knows all things, including what is best for us.
What this means for you
We all like to think we know best. But think about the last time you made a big decision on your own, without asking God and without asking anyone else. How did it go? Many of us have learned the hard way that our own thinking is not enough.
The fear of the Lord is not being scared of God. It means we take Him seriously. We put His Word above our feelings, above the news, and above what everyone else is saying. When God says something, we listen, even when we do not fully understand.
God also puts wise people around us. A pastor, a Life Group leader, an older believer who has walked with Jesus for many years. Proverbs 15:22 says plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Do not walk alone. Ask for help before you make big choices.
Think about it
Is there a decision in front of you right now that you have not prayed about?
Who is one wise, godly person you can talk to this week?
Pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word which provides truth and wisdom. Lord we pray that you place a hunger in us so we make more time for your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
