Defying the Atmosphere of Fear
“Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.””
To see why Jochebed’s story is so powerful, we need to look at the fear that filled her world. Many years had gone by since Joseph saved Egypt. A new king came to power, bringing a time of deep fear. Fear often leads to cruelty. First, the people faced harsh slavery, then secret killings, and finally, a public order that turned the Nile River into a grave for God’s people. Yet even in the darkest times, God’s light shines brightest.
Jochebed became pregnant during this time of fear. The government said her son was not allowed to live. The law demanded his death. Still, as Corrie ten Boom wrote in The Hiding Place, "There is no panic in Heaven! God has no problems, only plans." Jochebed chose to trust in Heaven’s faith rather than give in to Egypt’s fear.
Today, we also live in a world that often uses our worries and anxieties, especially about our children’s futures. Yet, just as Jochebed hid Moses and entrusted him to God’s care, we can entrust our loved ones and our future to God’s care. Even when we feel powerless, God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. We are not alone. He is with us, fighting for us, and making a way where there seems to be no way. We are called to create places of peace for our families, even when the world around us is afraid. When fear knocks, let faith answer the door. God is our refuge and strength, and His promises are the foundation we can stand on with confidence.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for being my Prince of Peace and the anchor of my soul. Even when fear surrounds me, your love is greater, and your promises stand firm. Forgive me for the times I have allowed the noise and anxieties of this world to shake my peace. Remind me, Lord, that you have overcome the world and that your victory is my hope. Fill my heart and home with your peace that surpasses all understanding, and let your joy be my strength each day. When the world demands panic, help me to stand confidently in your presence, knowing you are with me and for me. Empower me by your Holy Spirit to lead my family with courage, faith, and compassion. Let your perfect love drive out all fear, and may my life shine as a testimony of your goodness. Thank you for being faithful in every season. Your plans are good, and your love endures forever. In your precious name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
