Day 12: GPS (God’s Positioning Spirit)

Today’s Reading: Romans 8:1–17; Acts 13:1–4

Welcome to Day 12 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting 2023. This is Week 2, The Comfort of the Holy Spirit.

The Focus: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (Romans 8:14)

“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, THE HOLY SPIRIT SAID, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” (Acts 13:2)

The Meditation: “The Holy Spirit said . . .”

Led, Not Lost

Most of us would be lost without the map on our phones. It knows where we are and it tells us the next turn. God has given His children something far better. He has given us His Spirit.

Paul puts it simply. Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God (Romans 8:14).

The Spirit Who Makes Us Children

Romans 8 begins with freedom. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). The Spirit we have received does not make us slaves who live in fear. He is the Spirit of adoption, and by Him we cry, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). He Himself assures us that we are God’s children (Romans 8:16).

So guidance is not a technique. It grows out of a relationship. A child knows the voice of a father.

The Spirit Who Speaks

In Acts 13 we see this in the life of a local church. The leaders in Antioch were worshipping the Lord and fasting when the Holy Spirit spoke. He told them to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He had called them (Acts 13:2).

They did not rush. They fasted and prayed again, laid their hands on the two men and sent them off (Acts 13:3). Luke then says that the two were sent on their way by the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:4). The first great mission to the nations began in a prayer meeting.

How He Leads

The Spirit spoke while they were worshipping and fasting. He spoke to them together, and the others confirmed it. And He will never lead us against the Scriptures that He inspired. A mind that is governed by the Spirit is life and peace (Romans 8:6).

Pray It Through

  • Thank Him that you belong. Call God your Father today, and thank the Spirit for making you His child.

  • Ask for the next turn. Where do you need direction? Ask, and then give time to listen.

  • Test it. Hold what you sense against the Bible, and share it with a mature Christian you trust.

Prayer for Today

Abba, Father, thank You that I am Your child and that there is no condemnation for me in Christ. Holy Spirit, lead me. Speak to me as I worship and fast, and help me to recognise Your voice. Show me the next step, and give me the courage to take it. Set me apart for the work You have for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
