Day 10: Sitting High

Today’s Reading: Ephesians 1:18–21; 2:4–7

Welcome to Day 10 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting 2023. This is Week 2, The Comfort of the Holy Spirit.

The Focus: Ephesians 1:20b–21 “He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion.” (Ephesians 1:20b–21)

“AND GOD RAISED US UP WITH CHRIST AND SEATED US WITH HIM IN THE HEAVENLY REALMS IN CHRIST JESUS.” (Ephesians 2:6)

The Meditation: “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms.”

A Different View

Where you sit changes what you see. From the ground a problem can fill the whole sky. From higher up, the same problem takes its proper size.

Paul prays that the eyes of our hearts would be opened, so that we would know the hope to which God has called us and His incomparably great power for us who believe (Ephesians 1:18–19).

Where Christ Is Seated

That power, Paul says, is the same power God used when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 1:19–20). Jesus is far above every rule, authority, power and dominion, and above every name that can be named (Ephesians 1:21). Nothing that frightens us outranks Him.

Where We Are Seated

Then Paul says something that is hard to take in. We were dead in our sins. But God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ. He raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 2:4–6).

We did not climb to that seat. Paul says twice in this chapter that it is by grace we have been saved (Ephesians 2:5, 8). Our position is a gift, given because we are in Christ.

Living from There

This changes how we pray. We do not fight to reach a place of victory. We pray from the victory Jesus has already won. It changes how we see ourselves as well. Our standing with God does not go up and down with our performance.

So Paul tells us to set our hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God (Colossians 3:1).

Pray It Through

  • Thank Him for grace. You are seated with Christ because of mercy. Thank God for it out loud.

  • Look again. Bring the thing that most worries you and look at it from where Christ is seated.

  • Pray Ephesians 1:18–19. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart, and pray the same for someone you love.

Prayer for Today

Father, thank You that You are rich in mercy. When I was dead in my sins, You made me alive with Christ and seated me with Him. Open the eyes of my heart to see what You have done. Teach me to pray from Christ’s victory, and to live today with my heart set on things above. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
