Day 8: A King Who Brings Hope
Bible passage: Zechariah 9:9–12
A Word for Weary People
Today is Saturday 8th of January 2022. Welcome to Day 8 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. As we begin our second week, we turn to a promise spoken to tired and disappointed people.
The Israelites had come home from exile, but home was not what they had dreamed of. The city was half built, enemies were close and the glory days felt long gone. Into that discouragement the prophet Zechariah spoke.
Your King Is Coming
Humble and Victorious
Zechariah tells the people to shout for joy, because their King is on His way. He is righteous and victorious, yet He comes humbly, riding on a donkey’s colt (Zechariah 9:9).
Five hundred years later Jesus rode into Jerusalem in exactly that way, and the crowds laid their cloaks on the road (Matthew 21:1–9). He came without a war horse and without an army.
That tells us what kind of King He is. A war horse announces conquest. A donkey announces peace. Jesus won His victory not by taking lives but by laying down His own.
Peace to the Nations
This King removes the chariots, the war horses and the battle bows. He announces peace to the nations, and His rule stretches from sea to sea (Zechariah 9:10). The peace He brings is not only for one people. It is for the world.
Held by Hope
Out of the Pit
Then God makes a promise based on His covenant, sealed with blood: He will free His people from the waterless pit. He calls them back to their place of safety and describes them as prisoners who still have hope. He promises to give back double for all they have lost (Zechariah 9:11–12).
What a phrase. They were not prisoners of their circumstances. They were held by hope. That is true of us too, because our covenant has been sealed by the blood of Jesus.
This is the promise of a covenant-keeping God to people who had lost years to exile. He is able to restore what the hard seasons have taken from you.
Take Hold of Hope Today
Name the pit. Where do you feel stuck or shut in at the moment? Tell God about it honestly.
Run to your place of safety. The Lord is our help and our shield, and our hearts can rejoice in Him (Psalm 33:20–21).
Wait with expectation. “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.” Isaiah 40:31 (NLT) Waiting on God is never wasted time.
Your situation may not have changed yet. But your King has come, He is coming again, and He keeps His promises.
Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus, humble and victorious King, I rejoice that You have come. You see the places where I feel trapped. I choose today to be held by hope and not by fear. Lift me out of the pit, renew my strength and restore what has been lost. Let Your peace reach the nations. Amen.
