Day 6: The Prince of Peace and His Kingdom

Bible passage: Isaiah 9:6–7

A Promise in the Dark

Today is Thursday 6th of January 2022. Welcome to Day 6 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Most of us heard today’s passage at a carol service a few weeks ago. Let us hear it again now that the decorations are down.

Isaiah spoke these words around seven hundred years before Jesus was born. His nation was under threat, its kings had failed and the people were living in deep darkness. Into that darkness God made a promise.

A New Kind of King

A Child with Four Names

A child would be born and a son would be given, and the weight of government would rest on His shoulders. Isaiah gives Him four royal titles: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

Every earthly ruler eventually disappoints us or dies. This King does neither. “His government and its peace will never end.” Isaiah 9:7 (NLT)

How He Rules

Isaiah says this King will reign from David’s throne with fairness and justice. His peace is not the uneasy quiet that comes when the strong silence the weak. It is the peace that comes when things are put right.

And He did not arrive with an army. He came as a baby, grew up in an ordinary town and won His greatest victory on a cross. This is a new kind of King and a new kind of kingdom.

Living Under His Rule

Citizens of a Different Kingdom

When we were born again we were not only forgiven. We were brought under a new government. Jesus said His followers are in the world but do not belong to it (John 17:14–16). Our first loyalty is to Him.

That changes how we treat people, how we handle money, how we speak and how we respond when we are wronged. Psalm 99:4 calls God the mighty King who loves justice. His people should love it too.

Three Responses

  • Bow. Is there an area of your life where you are still on the throne? Hand it over to King Jesus today.

  • Reflect His rule. Where can you act with fairness and bring peace this week, at home, at work or in our community?

  • Pray for those in authority. Paul urges us to pray for all who lead, so that we may live peaceful and godly lives (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

One day the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever (Revelation 11:15). The passionate commitment of the Lord Himself will make sure of it.

Prayer for Today:
King Jesus, I bow to You and to You alone. You are my Wonderful Counsellor, my Mighty God and my Prince of Peace. Rule in every part of my life. Help me to live today as a citizen of Your kingdom, bringing fairness, justice and peace wherever I go. I pray for the leaders of our nation and our city. Give them wisdom. Amen.
