Day 22 and Beyond: Living as People of Peace

Bible passage: Revelation 22:1–5

So What Now?

Our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting are complete. Well done for finishing. But the end of a fast is not the end of seeking God. The question for today is simple: how do we keep living in His shalom?

The answer is to keep the end of the story in view. So for our final reading we turn to the last chapter of the Bible.

The End of the Story

A River and a Tree

John is shown a river carrying the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. On each side of the river stands the tree of life, bearing fruit every month, and its leaves bring healing to the nations (Revelation 22:1–2).

“No longer will there be a curse upon anything.” Revelation 22:3 (NLT) God’s servants will worship Him. They will see His face. There will be no night, because the Lord Himself will be their light, and they will reign with Him for ever (Revelation 22:3–5).

Eden, but Greater

It sounds like the garden at the beginning of Genesis: a river, the tree of life and God living with His people. But it is bigger. The garden has become a city. Two people have become the nations. Everything sin spoiled has been restored, and more.

The Bible ends in shalom: all of creation at peace with God and with itself.

Living from the Future

Forerunners of That Day

We are not waiting to escape this world. We are waiting for it to be made new. And because the Holy Spirit lives in us, we get to bring a taste of that future into the present. Wherever we go, we carry the peace of the world to come.

Keeping the Rhythm

  • Keep meeting with God. Hold on to the daily time you have built over these three weeks. Consider fasting regularly, perhaps one day each week or each month.

  • Pray for healing. Think of the leaves of that tree. Who do you know who needs healing in body, mind, emotions or relationships? Keep praying for them.

  • Pray for life in dry places. Think of that river. Where in our community and our nation is there decay? Ask God to let His river flow there.

  • Pray as Jesus taught. “May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Make that your daily prayer.

The psalmist said that he was counting on the Lord and had put his hope in His word (Psalm 130:5). And the whole story rests on this: God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

Prayer for Today:
Father, thank You for all You have done in these 21 days. Do not let me go back to where I was. Keep me hungry for Your presence. Let Your river flow through my life and bring healing to those around me. May Your Kingdom come and Your will be done, in my home, in our church and in our city, as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
