Day 11: When Jesus Comes to Your House

Bible passage: Luke 19:1–10

An Unexpected Guest

Today is Tuesday 11th of January 2022. Welcome to Day 11 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Yesterday God invited us to His table. Today Jesus invites Himself to ours.

Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in Jericho. He was rich, and he was hated, because his wealth had come from working for Rome and overcharging his neighbours. He was also short, so when Jesus came through town he climbed a tree to get a look.

Jesus Stops Under the Tree

Called by Name

Jesus stops, looks up and calls him by name. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” Luke 19:5 (NLT)

Zacchaeus had only hoped to see Jesus. Jesus wanted to stay with him. The crowd was not pleased. They muttered that Jesus had gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner. Jesus went anyway.

Think about that. In a crowded street, Jesus knew the name of the most disliked man in town. He knows yours as well, and He knows exactly where to find you.

What His Presence Did

Luke does not record a sermon at that dinner table. He records a response. Zacchaeus stands up and promises to give half his wealth to the poor and to pay back four times over anyone he has cheated.

Nobody forced him. The presence of Jesus in his home did what years of public disapproval never could. And Jesus declares that salvation has come to that house, because the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:9–10).

A Home of Shalom

Peace and Putting Things Right

A home of shalom is not simply a quiet home. It is a home where Jesus is welcome and where wrongs are put right. In Zacchaeus’s house, peace arrived together with repentance, generosity and justice.

Opening Your Door

  • Welcome Him into every room. Picture Jesus walking through your front door. What would He see? Invite Him into your finances, your relationships, your habits and your screens.

  • Put something right. Is there a person you need to apologise to or a debt you need to repay? Do not put it off.

  • Pray for your household. Jesus promised that He and the Father will make their home with those who love Him and keep His word (John 14:23). Pray that over everyone under your roof.

David wrote that he waits quietly before God, because his salvation comes from Him alone (Psalm 62:1). Let your home become that kind of place this year.

Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You know my name and that You want to come to my house. I open the door to You. Come into every room and every relationship. Show me what needs to be put right and give me the courage to do it. Let salvation come to my household, and make my home a place of Your peace. Amen.

Keep going
