Day 10: Serving the Lord Together
Bible passage: Joshua 24:14–15; Psalm 100; Acts 2:42–47
Not a Solo Journey
Today is Friday 10th of January 2020. Welcome to Day 10 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Yesterday we prayed for people to come to faith. Today we think about the family they come into.
At the end of his life, Joshua gathers all Israel and puts a choice in front of them. They must decide whom they will serve. Then he tells them his own decision. “But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 (NLT)
Made for Community
Jesus Shared His Life
Jesus could have carried out His ministry alone. He chose to share His life with twelve disciples. They ate together, travelled together and learned together, and then He sent them out to do the same with others.
The First Church
The first believers followed that pattern. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to sharing meals and to prayer. They met in the Temple and in one another’s homes, and they shared what they had with anyone in need. Each day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved (Acts 2:42–47).
What we do on a Sunday is precious. But a full life of following Jesus is built on more than a couple of hours a week. It is built on personal time with God and on real relationships with other believers, where we help each other to live and love like Jesus.
A Place for Everyone
Joshua spoke about his household. Households today come in many shapes. You may be married or single, widowed or divorced. You may live alone, or in a home where nobody else believes. Whatever your situation, God has a family for you and a place where you belong.
In that family we share our burdens and our joys. We forgive each other. We keep praying for one another, as Paul urges us to do (Ephesians 6:18). Praying together need not be complicated. It is simply talking to God in company.
Come with Joy
Psalm 100 tells us how to come. Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before Him singing with joy. Enter His gates with thanksgiving (Psalm 100:2, 4). We are His people, the sheep of His pasture, and sheep belong in a flock.
Who Are You Walking With?
Three Steps for Today
Listen. Prayer is a two-way conversation. Ask God whom He is placing on your heart, and listen for a name.
Arrange to meet. Get in touch with that person this week. Meet for a coffee or a walk, and ask how they really are. Invite Jesus into the conversation, whether they share your faith or not.
Join in. If you are not yet in a Life Group or serving on a team, take a step towards it this month.
Prayer for Today:
Lord, thank You that I do not have to follow You alone. Thank You for Your church, my family in Christ. As for me and my household, we will serve You. Show me whom You want me to walk beside. Give me the right words when we meet, and make our church a place of love, acceptance and prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
