Day 5: The Rock Whose Work Is Perfect
Bible passage: Deuteronomy 32:3–4; Isaiah 30:18; Micah 6:8; Jeremiah 22:3
A God Who Is Fair
Today is Tuesday 2nd of April 2019. Welcome to Day 5 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Today we look at the justice of God.
Near the end of his life, Moses taught Israel a song so that they would never forget who God is. This is how it begins. “He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair.” Deuteronomy 32:4 (NLT)
Moses goes on to call Him a faithful God who does no wrong.
The Just God
A Rock
A rock does not shift. Human justice does. It can be bought, delayed or bent, and all of us have seen or felt that. God’s justice is not like ours. He has never made an unfair decision, and He never will.
That is a great comfort to anyone who has been treated unjustly. Nothing has escaped His notice. One day He will put everything right.
He Waits to Be Gracious
Isaiah adds something we might not expect. The Lord must wait for us to come to Him so that He can show us His love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God, and those who wait for His help are blessed (Isaiah 30:18).
God’s justice is not cold. He is not hurrying to condemn. He is waiting to show mercy. And it is because He is just that His mercy can be relied on.
Doing Justice
What the Lord Requires
A just God wants a just people. Micah puts it in one sentence. The Lord has told us what is good, and what He requires of us is to do what is right, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).
Jeremiah is more specific still. Be fair-minded and just. Help those who have been robbed. Do not ill-treat foreigners, orphans and widows (Jeremiah 22:3). God names the people who are most easily pushed aside, and He tells His people to stand with them.
Close to Home
Justice begins with the way we ourselves deal with people. Are we fair at work? Do we keep our word? Do we treat people the same whether or not they can do anything for us?
Three Steps for Today
Thank Him. Praise God that He is upright and just, and that He wants justice for all His children.
Hand over your case. Is there a situation in your life where you long for justice? Tell God about it, and put it into His hands.
Speak up for someone. Ask God to show you a person who has no voice, and one thing you can do for them.
Prayer for Today:
Lord, You are the Rock. Everything You do is just and fair, and You do no wrong. I bring You the places in my life where I long for justice, and I leave them with You. Show me where I have been unfair, and help me to put it right. Teach me to do what is right, to love mercy and to walk humbly with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
