Day 20: No Good Thing Withheld

Bible passage: Exodus 33:18–19; Psalm 34:8; Psalm 84:11; 1 John 1:5; John 3:16

God Is Good

Today is Wednesday 17th of April 2019. Welcome to Day 20 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. We have nearly finished. Today we gather up everything we have seen in one small word. God is good.

The psalmist was sure of it. “The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” Psalm 84:11 (NLT)

He calls the Lord God our sun and our shield, the One who gives us grace and glory.

The Goodness of God

His Glory Is His Goodness

Moses once asked God to show him His glory. God answered that He would make all His goodness pass before him, and would call out His name, the Lord (Exodus 33:18–19). When God wants to show us how glorious He is, He shows us how good He is. Power, holiness, justice, mercy and faithfulness, all that we have looked at in these three weeks, is the goodness of God seen from different sides.

No Darkness at All

John sums up the message he heard from Jesus. God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all (1 John 1:5).

That means there is no hidden side to God. He has no bad days. He will never turn out to be different from what He has shown Himself to be in Jesus. In our darkest times we may not understand what He is doing. We can always be sure of what He is like.

Taste and See

David invites us to do more than agree. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him (Psalm 34:8). The goodness of God is to be experienced, and those who run to Him for refuge find out that it is true.

The Greatest Gift

He Gave His Son

Tomorrow is the last day of our fast, and then comes Good Friday. That name is well chosen. On that day we see the goodness of God most clearly of all.

This is how God loved the world. He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). And the goodness goes on. If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all wickedness (1 John 1:9). We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in His love (1 John 4:16).

Three Steps for Today

  • Give thanks. Make a list of the good things God has given you. Put Jesus at the top.

  • Trust His goodness. Is there a part of your life where you have begun to doubt that God is good? Bring it into the light, and tell Him about it.

  • Show it. Ask God for one way to show His goodness to somebody else today.

Prayer for Today:
Lord, You are good. You are light, and there is no darkness in You at all. Thank You for every good gift, and above all for Your Son, who died so that I could have eternal life. Forgive me for the times I have doubted Your goodness. Let me taste and see it again today, and show me someone I can share it with. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
