Day 2: Holy, Holy, Holy Is the Lord

Bible passage: Isaiah 6:1–8; 1 Samuel 2:2; 1 Thessalonians 4:7–8

No One Like Him

Today is Saturday 30th of March 2019. Welcome to Day 2 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Yesterday we looked at God’s power. Today we look at His holiness.

Hannah, praying after the birth of her son Samuel, put it very simply. No one is holy like the Lord. There is no one besides Him, and there is no Rock like our God (1 Samuel 2:2).

The Holy God

Set Apart

When the Bible calls God holy, it means first that He is set apart. He is not a bigger version of us. He is different from everything He has made, and far above it. He is also perfectly pure. There is no fault in Him and no shadow.

What Isaiah Saw

In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah was given a vision of the Lord sitting on a high throne, with the train of His robe filling the Temple. Above Him were mighty seraphim. Each had six wings, and with two of them they covered their faces. They were calling to each other. “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies!” Isaiah 6:3 (NLT)

Their voices shook the building to its foundations, and the Temple was filled with smoke (Isaiah 6:4).

Even the angels cover their faces before Him. This is the God we are seeking in these 21 days.

What Isaiah Said

Isaiah did not feel inspired. He felt undone. He cried out that he was a man with unclean lips, living among a people with unclean lips (Isaiah 6:5). A real sight of God’s holiness always shows us ourselves.

But God did not leave him there. A seraph touched his lips with a burning coal from the altar and told him that his guilt was removed and his sins were forgiven (Isaiah 6:7). The holy God makes people clean so that they can stand before Him and serve Him.

Called to Be Holy

Belonging to God

In the Old Testament, things became holy through their connection with God: holy ground, a holy day, a holy place. The same is true of people. To be holy is to belong to Him and to be devoted to Him.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that God has called us to live holy lives, not impure ones, and that He has given us His Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 4:7–8). He also tells them how it happens. We are saved by the Spirit who makes us holy and by our belief in the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:13). Holiness is God’s work in us. Our part is to give ourselves to Him.

Three Steps for Today

  • Worship. Spend time praising God that there is no one like Him. Read Isaiah 6:1–4 aloud.

  • Ask Him to search you. Invite the Holy Spirit to show you anything that needs to be made clean, and confess it.

  • Offer yourself. When Isaiah had been cleansed, he said, “Here I am. Send me” (Isaiah 6:8). Tell God that you are His.

Prayer for Today:
Holy God, there is no one like You. You are perfect in all Your ways. When I see who You are, I see how much I need Your mercy. Show me what needs to be made clean, and cleanse me. Thank You that You have given me Your Holy Spirit. I devote myself to You afresh. Here I am, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
