Day 13: Under the Shelter of His Wings
Bible passage: Lamentations 3:19–26; Psalm 91:1–4; Deuteronomy 7:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:24
Faithful in the Ruins
Today is Wednesday 10th of April 2019. Welcome to Day 13 of our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Today we look at the faithfulness of God.
The best-known words on this subject were written at a terrible time. Jerusalem had fallen. The Temple was a ruin. Jeremiah says that he will never forget that awful time, and that the thought of it is bitter beyond words (Lamentations 3:19–20). Then he says that he still dares to hope, and he tells us why. “Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” Lamentations 3:23 (NLT)
The Faithful God
A Choice to Remember
Jeremiah’s circumstances had not changed when he wrote that. What changed was where he looked. He deliberately called something to mind (Lamentations 3:21). Faithfulness is something we come to know about God by remembering what He has done, and often we have to choose to remember.
My Inheritance
Jeremiah had lost almost everything a person can lose. So he said to himself that the Lord was his inheritance, and therefore he would hope in Him (Lamentations 3:24). When everything else has been taken, God remains. He is good to those who depend on Him and search for Him, and it is good to wait quietly for His salvation (Lamentations 3:25–26).
For a Thousand Generations
Moses said the same thing long before. The Lord is the faithful God, who keeps His covenant for a thousand generations (Deuteronomy 7:9). His faithfulness reaches further back than we can remember and further forward than we can see.
A Place of Safety
Shelter and Shadow
Psalm 91 turns God’s faithfulness into a picture. Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He is our refuge and our place of safety. He will cover us with His feathers and shelter us with His wings. His faithful promises are our armour and protection (Psalm 91:1–4).
A young bird under its mother’s wing is not strong. It is safe because of where it is. Our safety lies in staying close to Him, and has little to do with our own strength.
He Will Do It
Paul ends a letter full of instructions with a promise that takes the weight off our shoulders. God will make this happen, for He who calls us is faithful (1 Thessalonians 5:24). What God has begun in us, He will finish.
Three Steps for Today
Call it to mind. Write down three times when God has been faithful to you. Thank Him for each one.
Name what you are waiting for. Tell God where you are still waiting to see His faithfulness. Tell Him that you are expecting it.
Take shelter. Read Psalm 91:1–4 slowly, and picture yourself under His wings.
Prayer for Today:
Faithful God, great is Your faithfulness. Your mercies are new every morning. Thank You for every time You have carried me through. You are my inheritance, and I put my hope in You. I bring You the things I am still waiting for, and I choose to trust You. Cover me, and let me rest in Your shadow today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
