Responsibility of the Father

Being a dad is a massive responsibility, but you aren’t called to do it in your own strength. In this moving message, Mary O'Connor reflects on her own childhood loss before highlighting the four essential pillars of biblical fatherhood through the life of Joseph.

Welcome back as we continue our special series leading up to Father's Day at All Nations Community Church. This week, Mama Mary shares her powerful personal testimony of growing up fatherless after losing her dad at a young age, before unpacking the life of Joseph the man chosen by God to be the earthly father of a heavenly King.

The Four Pillars of Biblical Fatherhood

Joseph was trusted with a monumental assignment because he was a man of absolute integrity. Mary highlights four core responsibilities that every dad is called to execute on their faith journey:

  • 1. Fathers are Spiritual Role Models: Fathers are called to be the primary spiritual guides in the home. God's mandate is to intentionally weave His Word into everyday, casual family conversations (Deuteronomy 6:4-7).

  • 2. Fathers are Providers: Providing for your household is a sacred responsibility. Scripture explicitly warns that neglecting this role is a denial of the faith (1 Timothy 5:8).

  • 3. Fathers are Disciplinarians: Correction should never be executed in raw anger, but rather with kind words that actively build a child's character without fracturing their spirit.

  • 4. Fathers are the ultimate example of God: Your children are like "little spies"—they watch how you handle everyday failures. True Christian living means modelling humility, transparency, and a genuine relationship with the Holy Spirit.

"We are just stewards of our children's lives for a very short time. We do not own them; we are simply minding them for God."
