The Heart of the Gospel
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16 (NIV)
Of all the verses in the Bible, and there are more than 31,000 of them, this one has been called the gospel in miniature. In a single sentence, it contains everything a person needs to know to be saved. It is simultaneously the simplest and the most profound statement ever spoken.
I want to walk slowly through it today, because familiarity can become the enemy of wonder.
For God so loved the world. Not the religious world. Not the morally tidy world. The world, broken, rebellious, wandering, self-centred. God looked at humanity in all its mess and loved it. This love was not triggered by anything we did. It preceded us, it pursued us, it refused to give up on us.
That he gave his one and only Son. This is the measure of the love. God did not send an angel. He did not issue a decree from a distance. He sent His Son, the dearest thing in all of creation, the very expression of His own nature, into the world He had made, to live and suffer and die among the very people who would reject Him.
That whoever believes in him shall not perish. Whoever. No qualification. No fine print. No list of requirements beyond this one: belief. Trust. Coming to Christ with empty hands and a willing heart.
But have eternal life. Not just life that lasts forever, although it does, but life in all its fullness, beginning now. A life connected to God, filled with purpose, sustained by love, anchored in hope.
I have preached this verse in Africa, at universities, in stadiums, and in small rooms. And every time, the same thing happens: the Spirit of God takes this simple truth and drives it into the heart like a nail. Because human hearts are the same the world over, longing for love, needing forgiveness, searching for meaning.
This verse is for you today. Read it again, slowly. Let it find you afresh.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for a love so great that it gave everything. Thank You that 'whoever' includes me. I believe in Jesus, not just as a historical figure, but as my Saviour and Lord. Let the wonder of John 3:16 never grow stale in my heart. Amen.
