The Battle Is Real, but So Is the Victor

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

I once saw a painting in a Romanian church that has never left my memory. It depicted a stairway to heaven, with pilgrims climbing upward. Below them, devils clawed at their feet, trying to drag them down into the flames. Above them, angels urged them onward. At the very top, Jesus stood, arms outstretched, waiting for those who made it through.

It was not a subtle piece of art. But it was honest. And it showed something our sanitised, comfortable Christianity often forgets: the Christian life is not a leisurely walk. It is a battle.

Paul makes it completely plain in Ephesians 6. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The real enemy is not the difficult person at work, not the politician you disagree with, not the culture or the media or the institution. These may be instruments. But behind the scenes, there is a spiritual reality, a battle between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness, and every Christian is in the middle of it, whether they acknowledge it or not.

The Christian who is unaware of this reality is the most vulnerable. Satan does not need to announce himself. He works through subtlety: through gradual compromise, through small deceptions, through the slow erosion of faith that happens when we stop being intentional about our walk with God.

But here is the truth that anchors everything: Christ has already won. The cross and the resurrection were not just events in history. They were the decisive victory over every spiritual force that opposes God. Satan is a defeated foe. He may still cause damage, but his ultimate end is certain.

God has given us everything we need for this battle: His Word, prayer, faith, righteousness, the Holy Spirit, and the community of His people. These are not decorative. They are weapons.

Put on the full armour of God today. Not because you are afraid. Because you know the battle is real and you know who wins.

Prayer: Lord, I acknowledge today that I am in a spiritual battle. Thank You that You have already won the war. Help me to stand firm in Your strength, to use the armour You have provided, and to face this day with the confidence of someone who knows the outcome. Amen.
