Greater Than Our Past
2 Samuel 12:24 (NLT) - "Then David comforted Bathsheba, his wife, and slept with her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. The Lord loved the child."
As I shared with you on Sunday, legacy is built on foundations, and often, those foundations are laid in the dark soil of grace. When we hear the name Bathsheba, our minds almost instinctively rush to the scandal. We remember the rooftop, the abuse of power, the heartbreak, and the devastating loss of her first child. The world loves to define people by their darkest moments.
But we serve a God of restoration. He is the Ultimate Architect, and He refuses to leave us trapped in our past. Bathsheba's story began in tragedy and scandal, but God, in His sovereign grace, allowed her to become the mother of the wisest king in Israel’s history. As Paul Tripp beautifully notes in New Morning Mercies, "God’s grace is a radical, life-altering, and fundamentally transformative reality." Bathsheba did not let her trauma or her past define her future. She allowed God’s redeeming grace to stabilise her. If you feel like your past disqualifies you from building a kingdom legacy, remember Bathsheba. God can build a beautiful future on the foundation of a redeemed past.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You that my past is not the one shaping me. You are. Please help me trust in Your healing grace and believe that You can create a lasting legacy of wisdom from my broken and difficult moments. In Jesus' name, Amen.
