God Has Not Left You Unprotected
"Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”.”
Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)
Never doubt that you are in the middle of a battle. That is not a statement designed to generate anxiety. It is a statement designed to generate alertness. The Christian who is unaware of the battle is the one most likely to be blindsided by it.
Satan is real. His opposition to God and to God's people is real. He attacks at points of weakness, often in the moments when we feel most secure. He is patient, he is strategic, and he is relentless. This is not my assessment. It is the consistent testimony of the New Testament.
But here is what is equally true, and infinitely more important: God has not left you unprotected.
The promise of Hebrews 13:5 is one of the most sweeping in the entire Bible. God says: I will never leave you nor forsake you. The original language uses an emphatic double negative that could be translated: I will never, not ever, under any circumstances whatsoever, leave you or forsake you. It is as absolute as a promise can be.
This means that in every battle you face, you are not fighting alone. You have resources that your enemy does not have. You have the Word of God, which is a sword. You have prayer, which is a direct line to the throne of the universe. You have faith, which is a shield against every weapon the enemy can bring. You have the Holy Spirit within you, and the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
God has promised to protect us in the midst of trouble, not necessarily to shield us from it. This is an important distinction. Difficulty is not evidence of abandonment. The battle does not mean God has stepped back. Often it is precisely in the most difficult moments that His presence is most powerfully and personally felt.
Satan is a defeated foe. His end is certain. And the God who is with you today has already seen the final chapter. He wins. And because you belong to Him, so do you.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that You have promised never to leave me or forsake me. In the battles I face today, remind me that I am not fighting alone. Give me courage, give me wisdom, give me the full equipment of Your Spirit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
