Crossing the Bridge

"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."

Acts 4:12 (NIV)

Suppose you are travelling down a road and you come to a deep gorge. The bridge has been washed away, and there is no possibility of jumping across. You have reached a point where your own ability to get where you need to go has completely run out.

Then you notice another bridge a short distance away. You watch people cross it. It looks solid. But you have a choice to make. You can stand on your side of the gorge, believing intellectually that the bridge looks sturdy, admiring its construction, agreeing with others who say it is reliable. Or you can put your full weight on it and walk across.

This is what it means to commit your life to Jesus Christ. Jesus has bridged the gap between us and God, a gap caused by sin. He did not merely show us a way across. He became the way. His death paid for the sin that separated us. His resurrection proved that the crossing is real. And now the bridge stands open.

But simply believing that the bridge exists is not enough. Even believing that it is sturdy is not enough. You have to commit to it. You have to put your full weight on it. Half a step is not a crossing.

Peter's declaration before the Sanhedrin was not diplomatic. It was not designed to avoid causing offence. It was simply true: there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Not one option among many. The only option. Because sin is a real problem, death is a real enemy, and only the actual Son of God, by His actual death and resurrection, could deal with either.

The bridge is there. The offer is real. The crossing is available to anyone who will genuinely commit.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I put my full weight on You today. Not partially, not intellectually only, but completely. You are the bridge, the only way across. I commit my life to You and trust You with everything. In Jesus' name, Amen.
