Christ Is Coming Back
"If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
John 14:3 (NIV)
The return of Christ is one of the most frequently mentioned doctrines in the entire New Testament. For every one verse about the first coming of Jesus, there are eight about His second coming. The early Church lived with their eyes on the horizon, fully expecting their Lord to return. This expectation was not escapism; it was their greatest motivation for holy living and faithful witness.
And yet, for many believers today, the return of Christ feels distant and theoretical. We nod at it in a creed, acknowledge it in a sermon, and then get back to the business of our daily lives. We've perhaps lost the sense of holy urgency that animated the early Church.
Jesus said it plainly and personally: 'I will come back.' Not 'a great historical event will unfold.' Not 'the cosmic order will shift.' He said, I, personally, specifically, certainly, will come back. This is a promise made by the One who has never broken a promise.
Why does this matter for how we live today? Because the return of Christ anchors everything. It means that history is not going in circles. It is going somewhere. The suffering and injustice of this world are not permanent. The brokenness that we see around us every day is not the final word. Christ will return, and He will set all things right.
But it also comes with a searching question: are you ready? Jesus warned that when He comes, many will be caught off guard, not because they weren't warned, but because they were distracted. The concerns of this life- work, worry, pleasure, comfort- can crowd out the eternal perspective.
Live today with the awareness that Jesus could return. Not in fear, but in readiness. In the same way that a bride prepares for her wedding day, we are called to live in active, joyful preparation for our Lord's return.
Let this truth shape your priorities, your relationships, and your choices today. He is coming. He promised. And He will not be late.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, stir in me a fresh anticipation of Your return. Help me to live not for the temporary but for the eternal. I want to be found faithful when You come. Come, Lord Jesus, and until You do, keep me about Your Father's business. Amen.
