As for Me and My House
"I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us? Then I said, Here am I! Send me."
Isaiah 6:8 (NKJV)
Isaiah 6 is one of the most remarkable chapters in the Old Testament. In a single passage, we watch a man move from a vision of God's holiness to a crushing awareness of his own unworthiness to a joyful willingness to be used. It is a portrait of a complete encounter with the living God.
The sequence matters. Isaiah did not begin with enthusiasm. He began with an overwhelming vision of who God is: high and lifted up, filling the temple, attended by seraphim crying 'holy, holy, holy.' The first response to a genuine encounter with God is not boldness. It is undone-ness. 'Woe is me, for I am undone. I am a man of unclean lips.'
But then came grace. A coal touched to his lips, sin purged, guilt taken away. And only after that, the call: " Whom shall I send? And Isaiah's response: here am I. Send me.
This is the pattern of genuine Christian service. Not volunteering out of energy or ambition or desire for significance. But responding to a call, from a God you have genuinely encountered, knowing that His grace has already dealt with your inadequacy.
Joshua had the same quality. When the whole nation of Israel was wavering in their commitment, unsure whose side they were on, Joshua made his declaration with complete simplicity and complete clarity: 'As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.'
That is one of the most powerful sentences in the Bible. Not 'as for me and my household, if things go well.' Not 'as for me and my household, when it is convenient.' As for me and my household, whatever everyone else decides. We will serve the Lord.
Have you made that declaration? Not just in words, but in the actual shape of your life? God is still asking: whom shall I send? The question is personal. It is addressed to you.
What will you say?
Prayer: Lord, here I am. Send me. Not because I am adequate, but because Your grace has made me willing. As for me and my household, we will serve You. Use us today, in whatever way You choose, for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
