Our Infinite God

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.
— Psalm 48:1 (NKJV)

I remember the first time as a child, I stood at the edge of the ocean. I had never experienced anything like it. I had seen pictures, of course, but seeing it, truly seeing it, with the horizon stretching further than my eyes could follow, left me speechless. For a moment, I felt very small. And in that smallness, I felt strangely safe.

That is exactly what it is like to encounter the greatness of God.

We live in a world that has reduced God to a size we are comfortable with. We like a God we can manage, a God who fits inside our systems and our theologies, a God who agrees with us and makes our lives easier. But the God of the Bible is far beyond all of that. He is infinite in knowledge, infinite in power, infinite in love, and we haven't even scratched the surface.

The psalmist writes, 'Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.' It sounds simple, but sit with it for a moment. The word 'great' is almost laughably inadequate for who God is. And yet it's all we have. Human language reaches its limit when it tries to describe a limitless God.

Here is why this matters practically: when you face a situation that feels impossible, and there will be those situations, the size of your God determines the size of your hope. If your God is small, your hope is fragile. But if you truly understand that God is infinite in His knowledge and awareness, that He is not confused by your situation, that He sees every detail and has a purpose even in the pain, then your hope becomes unshakeable.

He knows. He understands. He watches. He loves. And He has a purpose, even when you cannot see it.

Take time today to simply praise Him. Not to bring a list of requests, just to acknowledge who He is. There is something deeply restorative about taking our eyes off our problems and fixing them on the greatness of God. Worship does something to your soul that nothing else can.

Our God is great. And He is yours. Let that truth settle over you like sunlight today.

Prayer: Lord, You are far greater than I can comprehend, and yet You know me completely. Forgive me for shrinking You down to my own limited understanding. Today I simply want to praise You, for who You are, not just what You do. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised. Amen.
