Rising Above Dysfunction

Sunday 14 July 2024

Good morning, ANCC Men of Honour, and welcome to another blessed Sunday. Today, let's reflect on overcoming the challenges that life throws our way, especially those stemming from our backgrounds.

In Genesis 4:8, we encounter the first recorded conflict, an alarming moment between Cain and Abel that marked the beginning of family dysfunction. Yet, this ancient story serves as a potent reminder that having a troubled past is not a valid excuse for wrongdoing or failure in our lives. We all inherit some form of dysfunction, yet, like our ancestors Adam and Eve, we have the capacity to rise above it.

We live in a world where hatred and envy can escalate to extremes, even leading to violence, mirroring the hatred Cain harboured towards Abel. Despite such negativity, it is within our power to adopt a different mindset.

Today, choose not to harbour prejudice, anger, or bitterness. Do not let a legacy of dysfunction dictate your actions. Instead, embrace a life shaped by the grace and love of Christ. This functional faith empowers us to replace a 'get him before he gets me' attitude with one of generosity and proactive kindness.

As you face today's challenges, remember that you are not defined by past dysfunctions but by the decisions you make now, rooted in faith and love.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this new day and the opportunities it brings. Help us, Lord, to rise above our inherited dysfunctions and to live lives that reflect Your grace and love. Strengthen us to make choices that are not based on past hurts but on the healing and transformative power of Your Spirit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
