Where is God When Everything Goes Wrong?

Ever had one of those days where nothing seems to go right? The alarm doesn’t go off, the kettle breaks, you get bad news before breakfast, the kids are at each other’s throats, and by lunchtime you’re wondering if the whole world’s gone sideways. And somewhere in the middle of it all, you catch yourself whispering, “God, where are You? Because I could really use a hand here.”

I get it. Honestly, I’ve been there more times than I can count. And here’s what I’ve learned, often the hard way: God hasn’t moved an inch. He’s right there in the mess with you. He’s not panicking. He’s not confused. And He certainly hasn’t forgotten you.

Romans 8:28 says, All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Now, read that again. It doesn’t say “some things.” It doesn’t say “the things that make sense.” It says all things. The flat tyre. The awkward conversation. The setback that felt like a dead end. Even the stuff you’re too embarrassed to pray about. All of it.

And then Isaiah 55:8“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.

Thank goodness for that. Because if God thought like us, He would have given up long ago. His ways are bigger, kinder, and wiser than we can imagine, even when we can’t see the full picture.

Here is the heart of it: standing firm doesn’t mean having all the answers. It doesn’t mean pretending everything’s fine when it’s not. It means trusting God even when life doesn’t make a lick of sense. It means choosing to say, “I don’t understand this, but I know the One who does.”

You don’t bow to circumstances, you bow to Jesus. And that’s a choice you get to make fresh every single morning. Not a one-off decision. A daily, sometimes hourly, decision.

And let me tell you something: that choice changes things. Not always is your situation straight away, but definitely your heart. Because when you stop looking at the storm and start looking at the Saviour, peace shows up even in the chaos.

Think of Joseph. Young, full of dreams, loved by his dad. And what happened? His own brothers threw him in a pit, sold him into slavery, and wrote him off as dead. Then he was falsely accused, thrown into prison, and forgotten by people he’d helped.

If anyone had the right to say, “God, where are You?” it was Joseph. But here’s the thing, he never gave up trusting. He just kept going, one faithful step at a time. And years later, God used all that pain, the pit, the slavery, the prison to save entire nations from famine. Joseph looked back and said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.”

Now, you might not see the good yet. That’s okay. Joseph didn’t see it for years. But he trusted anyway. And that’s exactly what God is asking you to do today.

So today, let’s choose trust over frustration. You don’t have to fix everything. You don’t have to understand everything. You just have to hold on to the One who holds everything together.

And here’s the motivating part: when you trust God like that, you become unshakable. Not because life gets easier, but because your foundation gets stronger. You stop living at the mercy of your moods and circumstances and start living from a place of peace and purpose.

So go on, make that choice right now. Say it out loud if you need to. “I trust You, God. Not because I see the way, but because I know the Way-Maker.”

Lord, I trust You even when I don’t understand. Especially when I don’t understand. Help me to believe, deep down, that You are working in every broken bit of my day. Give me the courage to stand firm, the patience to wait on You, and the peace that comes from knowing You’ve already got it all in hand. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Stay with it, church. It’s all good, not because life is perfect, but because our God is perfect. And He’s not finished with you yet. Keep going. You’re doing better than you think.

With you on the journey,
Pastor Ras
