Sealing with Boundaries
Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
Alongside the sealant of prayer, we must also apply the sealant of boundaries and presence. John Calvin warned in his book, Institutes of the Christian Religion, that the human heart is an idol factory, and that the world is a dangerous sea trying to flood it. To keep the water out, Jochebed made sure there were no gaps in the basket.
In our modern lives, we leave massive gaps in our families' baskets when we fail to establish boundaries. We must watch what our children are watching, know who they are hanging out with, and understand what they are being taught. Sometimes, applying "pitch" looks like having a difficult conversation with a teacher, limiting screen time, or saying "no" to a toxic influence. Sealing the boat is hard work. It requires vigilance. But God’s grace is strong enough to help you patch up even the oldest cracks in your foundation. One reed at a time.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, give me the boldness to set healthy, godly boundaries in my home. Help me to be vigilant without being fearful, guarding the hearts of those I love. Jesus, be the centre of our home and the foundation of our relationships. May Your wisdom guide every decision we make as a family, and may Your peace fill our hearts and minds. Empower us to reflect Your love in every boundary we set, so our household honours You above all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
